Discover the Best Day Trips from Forster-Tuncurry

Rain, hail, or shine — adventure awaits!

When you’re holidaying in Forster-Tuncurry, you’re not just booking a beach break — you’re unlocking the door to a whole region packed with family-friendly fun. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, wandering charming hinterland towns, or cosying up for a winter winery lunch, there’s always something new to explore.

So, rug up or slap on some sunscreen — here are our favourite year-round day trips from Forster for curious kids, adventurous adults, and everyone in between.

1. Booti Booti National Park – Nature’s Playground, Just Minutes Away

Drive time: 10 mins
Perfect for: bushwalking, picnics, winter swims (for the brave!)

Booti Booti is right on Forster’s doorstep — and it’s a hit no matter the season. Walk the 420 step trail to Cape Hawke Lookout for panoramic ocean views, or pack a thermos and explore Seven Mile Beach where the kids can fossick for shells while you unwind to the sound of waves.

Local tip: The Booti Walking Track loop is mostly shaded, winds above the rugged coastline, and down around to the shores of Wallis Lake. The 8km loop is great for stretching the legs. Don’t forget to stop at Elizabeth Beach for a dip – we promise the aqua waters are worth the small detour.

2. Stroud & Gloucester – Country Charm Meets Cosy Cafés

Drive time: 1 hr–1 hr 15 mins
Perfect for: heritage trails, farmers markets, winter road trips

Head inland for a change of pace and explore the historic town of Stroud or the scenic beauty of Gloucester, nestled at the base of the Bucketts Mountains. Stop for homemade pies, browse antique stores, or visit local markets and stock up on fresh produce.

Don’t miss: The Gloucester Museum and the chance to dip your toes in the Barrington River (yes, even in winter — it’s worth it!).

3. Cape Hawke Lookout – A Must-See in Every Season

Drive time: 10 mins
Perfect for: views, whale watching (May–November), quick adventures

A short but steep climb leads you to one of the best-kept secrets in Forster: the Cape Hawke Lookout. On a clear day, you can spot Booti Booti to the south and Wallingat to the west — plus migrating whales during the cooler months.

Bonus: It’s free and takes less than an hour return — ideal for an afternoon mini-adventure.

4. Wallingat National Park – Hidden Forest Adventures

Drive time: 35 mins
Perfect for: scenic drives, peaceful picnics, wildlife spotting

For families who love getting off the beaten track, Wallingat National Park offers quiet forest trails, the jaw-dropping Whoota Whoota Lookout, and plenty of grassy spots to throw down a rug and relax. Visit in winter and you’ll often have it all to yourself.

What to pack: Binoculars — you might see lyrebirds, wallabies, and black cockatoos.

5. Wineries & Breweries – Grown-Up Fun (With Space for the Kids!)

Drive time: 45 mins–1 hr
Perfect for: relaxing afternoons, fireside lunches, paddock-to-plate experiences

Parents, this one’s for you — but the kids won’t complain either! Great Lakes Paddocks (near Wootton) is a local gem, offering family-friendly wine tastings, live music, and grazing platters on the lawn. In cooler months, cosy up inside with a cheese board while the kids play outside.

Other favourites: The Coastal Brewing Co. in Forster for craft beer and community vibes.

6. Dolphin and Whale Cruises – Marine Magic, All Year Round

Departure: Forster Marina
Perfect for: ocean-loving families, unique wildlife experiences

Hop aboard a dolphin cruise from Forster and see the coastline from a whole new perspective. Dolphins love the area year-round, and between May and November, you might spot a majestic humpback on their annual migration.

Fun fact: The kids can even join in as “junior skippers” and help steer the boat!
